Complaints about phone use at concerts are nothing new; attendees have long cited obstructed views, privacy concerns and a degeneration of authenticity. While select venues continuously enforced strict no-photography rules, many welcomed the free publicity of social media by creating appealing photo installations and moments.

Now mainstream audiences and organizers are seriously pushing back. According to a report compiled by popular event platform and ticket vendor Eventbrite, no-phone event listings are up 567% between 2024 and 2025, with attendance up 121% worldwide.

A Global Movement

At first glance, the effect appears milder in the U.S., where listings are up “only” 388%, lower than the global average. That could not be further from the truth – as reported attendance numbers are actually up a whopping 913%. Meaning, that there were almost 4x as many no-phone events, with each, on average, doubled in venue-size and audience year over year. Growth in the U.K. is even more extreme, where the total number of events is 1,200% higher, hosting 1441% more attendees.

This idea is not from out of nowhere. Lane 8’s This Never Happened label and series of events is celebrating 10 years of phone-free performances, marking the label as a leader in a movement that has been bubbling up since recording at events first hit critical mass. Meanwhile, LA-based EDM organizer Brownies and Lemonade launched their series of popular No Phone Zone shows, promising “no phones on the dance floor, no distractions, no backstage, no VIP.” Fred Again.. heavily discouraged cellphone use throughout his USB002 tour, instead releasing over 108 hours of professionally filmed footage.

A Lasting Change

An absence of easily taken photos, however, does not imply an absence of word-of-mouth excitement. Photos of camera stickers and blacked-out “I guess you had to be there” social media posts are a popular way of showing off after the fact, further driving future attendance by demonstrating the appealing mystique of these events.

Already more than a short trend, this change suggests a mainstream cultural shift. Popularity of disconnected events continues to grow, as over 1/3rd of the amount of phone-free events listed on Eventbrite in 2025 had already happened by the end of March 2026. The shift away from cellphone use signifies more than mere nostalgia. Audiences increasingly find that a focus on full, physical presence deepens their experience. Shunning screens is an intentional push for spontaneity, community and freedom on wild nights out.
